Areas of inquiry in American history have expanded to include borders between European and American empires and American Indians, borders between states and Indian reservations, and even borders between various American Indian tribes. In academia, the field of borderlands studies has grown rapidly grown since the 1990s and now encompasses a broad variety of topics. The United States’ boundaries with Canada and Mexico are common examples. When one thinks of borders in the American West, international boundaries often come to mind.
